Justice Clarence Thomas was born in rural Georgia. When he started school in 1954, he went to a private all-black school. Justice Thomas was raised by his grandfather, who wanted him to get a good education. As a child, he enjoyed reading, especially comic books, and he was very proud to get his first library card. Justice Thomas was taught to work hard, and he started working in the family business selling fuel oil when he was in the 4th grade. He joined the school paper during his sophomore year in high school. Justice Thomas spent his last years in high school at a seminary school, a school for people who want to be priests. While going to college, Justice Thomas saw unfairness in the world and that made him angry. He decided he did not want to be a priest anymore, and he went to law school instead. Justice Thomas became a Supreme Court justice on October 23rd, 1991.
