Meet the Supreme Court. There are nine Justices on the Supreme Court, but how did they get there?
When a Supreme Court Justice dies or retires, there is a seat open on the Court. The President of the United States chooses a person to fill the seat. This is called a nomination and the person is called a nominee. After the president nominates someone, the Senate takes a vote to confirm the nominee as a Justice of the Supreme Court. If a majority of the Senate votes to confirm, the nominee takes an oath of office, and becomes a Justice of the Supreme Court.
In this section you will learn more about the current Justices of the Supreme Court – what they were like growing up, how they became interested in the law, and eventually how they made it to the Supreme Court!
